WYBALENNA - PATRIARCHS WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Heading east we drive through the large rural cattle farms, with lush green rolling paddocks. We will drive past Cameron’s Inlet, breeding ground for black swans and many species of duck, before stopping at Patriarch Sanctuary. This wildlife haven is a habitat for the local wildlife and birdlife including wombats, wallabies and Cape Barren Geese. Admire the view from Furneaux Lookout before having a stroll along sandy Allports Beach, which is dotted with granite outcrops and has seagrass meadow growing only 100m offshore. We will discover the sad history of Wybalenna, a small settlement established in 1833—1847 to house Tasmanian Aboriginal people brought to Flinders Island by George Robinson. Today, the only remaining building is a red brick chapel which has been restored by the National Trust and is of national heritage significance. We then finish the day at Sawyers Bay before returning to our accommodation.
