  • DAY 6: SATURDAY 29TH AUGUST, 2026

    MORE OF BROOME

This morning we spend some time wandering the newly revitalized Town Beach precinct of Broome, colloquially known as Old Jetty.  Town Beach used to be the site of Broome's main jetty, the original Port of Broome until the mid-1970s when a new jetty was constructed at Entrance Point. Located at the top of the walkway down onto this new fishing jetty stands the “9 Zeros – 9 Stories" statues honouring the 1942 Japanese air raid victims. The nine aluminium figures each represent a personal narrative from the event. Facing Roebuck Bay, the memorial captures chaos, loss and reconciliation from a pivotal moment in Broome’s history. As it is Saturday we make a stop at the Broome Courthouse Markets held in the historic Broome Courtyard gardens, offering a lively showcase of local art, craft and gourmet food. Enjoy live entertainment, unique handmade goods and experience Broome’s vibrant community atmosphere. This afternoon we visit one of Broome’s historic icons the Japanese Cemetery to reflect on the diverse multicultural history of Broome as we wander amongst the hundreds of graves, with unique headstones crafted out of coloured beach rocks. Later this afternoon we visit the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park and Animal Refuge. The shop museum showcases an extraordinary display of Malcolm's 40 years spent producing his famous adventure films.  This evening, we have the opportunity to see the “Staircase to the Moon”, a natural phenomenon which occurs when a full moon rises over the exposed tidal flats of Roebuck Bay. The Staircase to the Moon happens two-three days a month between March and October and we are lucky enough to be here for it.  We will have time to wander through the markets at Town Beach. Here we can sample local produce, buy hand made products, a variety of international food, and enjoy the sounds of locals. This will be a stunning conclusion to our wonderful holiday!
