Norfolk Island Bounty Day

2024

9 DAY FULLY INCLUSIVE TOUR

Wednesday 5th June To THURSDAY 13th June

At first glance it is hard to believe that the vibrant Norfolk Island could have a dark

past. Yet during the 19th century the now peaceful Australian retreat was a convict colony, home to criminals who had been banished into exile. Norfolk Island has a

rich history. It boasts pristine waters, amazing snorkeling, majestic Norfolk Pines

and a world heritage listed backdrop. Bounty Day celebrates the anniversary of the arrival of the Pitcairn Islanders to Norfolk Island and is an important part of the celebrated history of the island.

Bounty Day celebrates the anniversary of the arrival of the Pitcairn Islanders to Norfolk Island. Today, roughly a third of Norfolk’s residents are descended from the settlers who arrived on 8th June, 1856. Dressed in traditional period costume, the arrival of the Pitcairners is re-enacted and wreaths are laid to remember the original settlers. Celebrations include family reunions, a grand picnic and traditional sports. This is a very important and historical day for Norfolk Islanders. We relax and enjoy the festivities of the day partaking in the grand picnic highlighting traditional food.  Tonight, we experience insight into Norfolk living as we progress with each course from Norfolk Island home to home.  Meet the locals and listen to their family histories and stories during our three-course Progressive Dinner. This will be one of the highlights of our tour!  What a great day!

The tour starts with a look at the industries and enterprises that help sustain the Norfolk community. From raising meat to market gardening, creating unique tastes of Norfolk Liqueurs, we experience Norfolk Island’s sustainability. After dinner at the Bounty Bar and Grill, we enjoy Wonderland by Night – follow a gently meandering path through 10 acres of Norfolk Pines with dioramas, poetry and stories of times gone by that have shaped life on the Island.

We cruise the beautiful crystal clear, calm waters of Emily and Slaughter Bays inside the reef.  Coral gardens and over 100 species of tropical fish, the vast marine life and their habitats make for wonderful viewing. Back on dry land, we enjoy a light lunch. (Timing this morning is dependant upon the tide.) This afternoon, we can enjoy a glimpse into the life of a literary icon. Colleen McCullough made Norfolk Island home for 36 years. Today our tour takes us to the luxurious private hideaway that she and her husband, Ric Robinson, called home.  Colleen was an eclectic collector and on our tour of her beloved property “Out Yenna”, we can view Ric and Colleen’s priceless collection of artefacts gathered on their travels all over the world. Our farewell dinner this evening is factual yet fun theatre as we learn how the Commandants and their families adapted to life in a Norfolk Island penal colony, recreating a little piece of England in the Pacific at the Commandants Dinner.
